07 February 2007

Senator Judith Adams, representing the Minister for Defence, Member for Brand Mr Kim Beazley and the Deputy Commander Australian Fleet, Commodore Ray Griggs CSC RAN, joined family and friends in welcoming home to Fremantle, personnel from HMAS Warramunga following a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf.

HMAS Warramunga, an ANZAC Class frigate, was stationed in the North Persian Gulf as part of Operation CATALYST from July 2006 to January 2007 and assisted in the detection, deterring and intercepting of vessels within Iraqi waters suspected of undertaking illegal activity.

This was the first time Warramunga was deployed in support of operations in the Middle East.

During her time in the Gulf, Warramunga conducted 150 boardings and security patrols, over 1200 boat evolutions, 21 replenishments at sea and vertical replenishments, 320 flying hours by its embarked Navy Seahawk helicopter and 450 investigative queries of merchant Vessels.

Warramunga was away for 186 days, travelling some 24981 nautical miles. During this period, five members became fathers, all for the first time, and the ship received 6300 kilograms of mail from family and friends.
