Darwin’s 1st Brigade homecoming
18 December 2007
Soldiers from Darwin’s 1st Brigade arrived home recently after successfully completing their six month mission supporting the 3rd rotation of the Overwatch Battle Group-West (OBG-W) in Iraq.
Commander of the 1st Brigade, Brigadier Michael Krause, greeted and thanked the returning troops before they were reunited with families, partners and loved ones, who had lined the airport to see the soldiers disembark.
The majority of soldiers returning in this group were from the 1st Combat Signals Regiment and the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
The Battlegroup’s milestones included the conduct of over 600 patrols; undertaking 84 CIMIC projects that improved the lives of local Iraqis while enhancing the permissive environment for the combat teams; conducting more than 22 major security operations in direct support of Coalition forces; and different parts of the Battle Group training and mentoring approximately 2500 Iraqi Army Troops.
The Overwatch Battle Group-West (OBG-W) is currently operating in the southern Iraqi province of Dhi Qar and consists of a headquarters, a cavalry squadron, an infantry company equipped with ASLAVs and Bushmaster vehicles.
