The Prime Minister of Australia, The Honourable Kevin Rudd MP visits troops in Timor-Leste

The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, stopped off in Timor-Leste for a whirlwind tour.

They visited soldiers from the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) at the helicopter base in Dili.

The special guests ate lunch with troops and Australian Federal Police officers before the Prime Minister addressed the crowd.

After lunch the Prime Minister received a briefing from the Commander of the ISF, Brigadier John Hutcheson.

The Prime Minister also met the President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta and the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão.

There are around 780 Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste as part of Operation ASTUTE, the Australian Government response to the Timorese Government’s request for assistance in restoring peace to their country.

The Australians, as part of the ISF, are assisting the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations to provide a secure environment for all.

Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.

There are approximately 780 ADF personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste continuing to provide a robust response capability to support the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Police force.
