Spices of the Middle East

11 December 2007

RAAF Cook Matthew has been working with cooks of many nationalities including Sri Lankan, Indian, Bangladeshis and Nepalese. He says his cooking has improved and he has learnt some great ways to make a curry. Matthew is in the final month of a six month deployment to the Middle East.

The maritime patrol task group operates two AP-3C Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft in missions over the Persian Gulf and Iraq in support of Operations CATALYST and SLIPPER.

The missions have included overland reconnaissance, maritime patrols and oil terminal protection sorties to support the rehabilitation of Iraq and the coalition against terrorism.

Orion aircraft act as long range eyes in the sky and have tracked people, vehicles, and ships of interest for Coalition Forces.

On an average month the aircraft fly over 200 hours in support of operations.

Operation CATALYST is the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq. Working with the Iraqi Government, the ADF continues to contribute to Multi-National Force efforts to develop a secure and stable environment in Iraq, assist national recovery programs and facilitate the transition to Iraq self-government.

Operation SLIPPER is the ADF contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Operation SLIPPER is an important component of the Australian Government's commitment to working together with the international community to help prevent acts of terrorism around the world.
