HMAS Adelaide Freedom of Entry
03 December 2007
During the Naval Association reception the Ship’s Bell from the first HMAS Adelaide was handed back to the City for safe keeping until the next HMAS Adelaide, (LHD 02), one of two amphibious Assault vessels to be built for the RAN is Commissioned. The Adelaide had received a bell at a Naval Association reception on February the 19th 1982.
The South Australia’s Governor (His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce (AO CSC, RANR) visits the ship to call on the Commanding Officer and present medals and awards to a number of the crew members. He took the time to share ‘stand easy’ with the members of the Ship’s Company in the junior Sailor’s Café.
He later attends the Formal Reception as guest of honour
The visit is not only the final poignant farewell to the City of Adelaide, but also coincides with SA’s Navy Week celebrations. A number of memorable social events had been arranged for the Ship’s Company. The Official Reception being one of the highlights consisting of a traditional Ceremonial Sunset.
The visit also afforded the Ship the opportunity to exercise it’s right of Freedom of Entry through the City, a right that the ship had exercised on many previous occasions since it’s first on the 20rh February 1982. On that first occasion the Ship had received its Charter, but on this, the final entry, the Charter was returned to the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Michael Harbison.
HMAS Adelaide will enjoy a six day port visit to Adelaide, South Australia, reinforcing the ties held between the ship and her namesake town.
The visit will provide an opportunity for the Ship’s company to say farewell to the people of Adelaide prior to decommissioning of HMAS Adelaide, early 2008.
During her commissioned lifetime HMAS Adelaide has enjoyed numerous overseas deployments including the Persian Gulf, Northern Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific. HMAS Adelaide was one of the first RAN ship’s ordered to the Persian Gulf following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. HMAS Adelaide is also the ship that rescued stricken yachtsmen Tony Bullimore and Thierry Dubois from the Southern Ocean in January.
