11 Squadron outstanding in Middle East

14 August 2007

Adelaide's No.11 Squadron was recognised by Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd, for successfully completing one of the longest continuous periods of operational service in the unit's history.

A ceremony was held at RAAF Base Edinburgh on Friday 10 August to recognise 11 Squadron's outstanding achievements over the past four-and-a-half years of continuous active service in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). The ceremony was a reflection of the AP-3C Orion detachment's professionalism and provided the opportunity to thank the families of 11 Squadron for their ongoing support during the deployment.

11 Squadron members have been an integral part of the AP-3C Orion Task Group from January 2003 to July 2007. During this time, 11 Squadron committed up to 70 personnel to support Operations Falconer, CATALYST and SLIPPER. No.11 Squadron conducted a variety of maritime and overland surveillance operations over Iraq, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, supporting both Australian and Coalition Forces during their tour of duty.

To date in the MEAO, the AP-3C detachment consisting of No.10 and 11 Squadron aircraft has flown more than 1000 missions, equating no more than 10,500 flying hours. The deployment of RAAF Orion's to the Middle East continues today with 10 Squadron.
