Army Reserve soldiers from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are deploying to Solomon Islands on Operation ANODE for about three months to assist the Participating Police Forces (PPF) maintain stability, law and order in Solomon Islands.
This is the largest collective deployment of Army Reservists from these states since World War Two. They were fare welled from Townsville by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Mr Peter Lindsay, MP.
Operation ANODE is the name of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribution to the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI). RAMSI's assistance is known as Operation HELPEM FREN (Pidgin English for 'Helping Friend'). Its mission is to assist the Solomon Islands' Government in restoring law and order.
The military component of RAMSI comprises personnel from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Tonga. Their main task is to provide security for RAMSI's multinational, Australian Federal Police (AFP) led Participating Police Force.
