Defence Minister visits Australian troops in the Middle East

The Australian Minister for Defence, the Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson, visited Australian personnel serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East Area of Operations.

In Kabul, he held talks with Afghanistan’s Defence Minister General Abdul Raheem Wardak, before visiting Australian military personnel based in Oruzgan Province in southern Afghanistan.

In Iraq, he visited Overwatch Battle Group (West) personnel based at the Tallil Air Base in the southern Iraqi province of Dhi Qar.

In Baghdad, the Minister spoke with Security Detachment personnel before calling on the Commander of the Multi-National Force-Iraq General David Petraeus. The Iraq visit also included the opportunity to speak with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki who passed on his great appreciation for the current Australian Defence Forces commitment to his country.
