HMAS TOBRUK during a successful beaching at the Cowley Beach

01 September 2006

HMAS Tobruk, the Royal Australian Navy’s 5,800-tonne amphibious landing ship, has conducted a series of beachings at the Cowley Beach training area in Northern Queensland.

Representing a significant milestone in the continued development of the Australian Defence Force’s amphibious capability, the beachings involved discharging a small number of Army vehicles directly onto the beach via the ship’s bow door.

Supported by a Hydrographic survey team from HMAS Melville, Clearance Divers from Australian Clearance Diving Team One, an Amphibious Beach Team, a Blackhawk helicopter from 171 Aviation Squadron and vehicles from 10th Field Support Battalion, the beachings were considered a significant achievement.
