Opening of the Sale Child Care Centre

15 May 2006

Defence and other local families in Sale, Victoria, would benefit from extra childcare places, the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Bruce Billson, said on 15 May 2006 at the official opening of the East Sale Child Care Centre.

"The new Centre caters for up to 50 children between 0-5 years in a safe and monitored environment with educational programs designed specifically to suit each age group," Mr Billson said.

"The Australian Government, through Defence, is committed to providing Defence families with access to high quality child care facilities and now has 33 long day child care centres located at or close to military establishments across Australia.

"General community access to child care places is also encouraged when positions are available, although this is subject to the Defence priority of access guidelines.

"Under the Defence Childcare Expansion Program, more child care places for Defence children will be progressively identified around the country to ensure the needs of Defence families are meet and the best possible child care is provided to families.

"Defence families also play an extremely important role in defending Australia and the Australian Government is committed to a Defence Force that is family friendly and an employer of choice," Mr Billson said.
