HMAS Geelong decommissioning

22 June 2006

After 22 years of service to the Navy, the ship will enter Darwin Harbour for the last time. She will be the seventh of the Navy’s fifteen Fremantle Class Patrol Boats to decommission. A formal decommissioning ceremony will take place Saturday, 8 July 2006, at HMAS COONAWARRA, Larrakeyah Barracks, Darwin.

Built by North Queensland Engineers and Agents Ltd in Cairns, Queensland, HMAS GEELONG was launched on 14 April 1984 and commissioned on 2 June 1984. She has been based in Darwin since 1988.

She is the second Royal Australian Navy ship to bear the name GEELONG. The first was a BATHURST CLASS corvette, which saw active service in WWII.
