Afghanistan veterans welcomed home - soldiers' gallantry honoured

2 December 2006

Soldiers, predominantly from the Perth-based Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), who have recently returned from an operational tour of duty in Afghanistan, were officially welcomed home by His Excellency Major-General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia at a ceremony at Campbell Barracks.

The soldiers formed part of the 200-strong Special Forces Task Group (SFTG) operating in Oruzgan Province, southern Afghanistan.

Australian Special Forces were involved in almost daily contacts and some of the most ferocious fighting since the Vietnam War during their
12-month deployment to Afghanistan.

The Governor General presented three Medals for Gallantry to three of the Australian soldiers in recognition of their conspicuous acts of gallantry and leadership whilst in combat. A fourth soldier was presented with a Commendation for Gallantry.
