More
than 100 additional Australian soldiers have
deployed to Southern Afghanistan. The majority
of these personnel and their two Chinook helicopters
are drawn from Townsville’s 5th Aviation Regiment.
These forces join the 190 Australian personnel
already operating in that country.
The Chinook group will form part of the Combined
Forces Command (Knighthawk Task Force) in Afghanistan
and will provide air mobility support and aero
medical evacuation capabilities for coalition
forces and the Australian Special Forces Task
Group.
The two CH-47 D Chinook helicopters are designed
for transporting troops, heavy lift capability
and medical evacuation.
The airframes have recently undergone upgrades
that enhance their communication, crew and passenger
protection and electronic self-protection capabilities.
