10 March 2006
The Royal Australian Air Force No.36 Squadron, from RAAF Base Richmond, NSW, will transport equipment for a surgical team from the Sydney Adventist Hospital to Honiara in the Solomon Islands on Thursday, 9 March 2006, in support of the charitable medical aid organisation, Operation Open Heart.
The Air Forces C-130H Hercules aircraft, a tactical and multi-role transport aircraft, will be used to transport the 3,000 kilogram load of medical equipment.
The role of the C-130H Hercules is to provide tactical air support to the Australian Defence Force throughout the world, search and survivor assistance, medical evacuation and aid to Australian and neighbouring civil communities.
Operation Open Heart is a charitable organisation supported by AusAID. It comprises medical specialists from Sydney Adventist Hospital who volunteer their time and expertise to perform surgical operations throughout the South West Pacific region.
The project aims to assist local doctors in diagnosis and treatment options, provide urgent surgery for patients, provide in-service training for local medical staff, assist with equipment needs and contribute to preventive cardiac programs.
