Minister for Defence visits Special Forces in Afghanistan

08 March 2006

The Minister for Defence, Dr Brendan Nelson, and the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, visited Australian troops deployed to the Middle East in early March 2006.

During the fourth day of their Middle East programme, the Minister and CDF visited Australian Special Forces located in Afghanistan as part of Operation SLIPPER -- Australia's contribution to the international coalition against terrorism.

Operation SLIPPER began in October 2001. It currently comprises approximately 200 Australian Defence Force personnel. Operation SLIPPER is an important component of the Australian Government's commitment to working with the international community to help to prevent acts of terrorism around the world.
