NORFORCE protecting the northern coast line

03 March 2006

While the world watches the Australian Defence Force in Iraq, operations and exercises are constantly underway at home under our very noses.

Every day Australian soldiers patrol our coasts, watching and observing, ever vigilant for incursions into Australian waters by foreign fishing vessels, commonly known as FFVs. NORFORCE maintains a surveillance network throughout the Northern Territory and the Kimberley’s 365 days a year.

Last week several patrols from Darwin Squadron NORFORCE with an LCM8 in support set out from Darwin on ‘Exercise Vigilant Lizard II’ for 14 days to conduct surveillance operations, patrolling activities and community engagement tasks in the Top End.

While patrolling allows NORFORCE to periodically monitor our coastline, the community engagement that NORFORCE soldiers conduct, is perhaps even more vital.

Community engagement raises awareness in the Indigenous communities in the north to FFVs entering our waters, provides positive relationships with the traditional landowners, and also acts as a method of recruiting for NORFORCE.

It means that while NORFORCE soldiers are off duty in their respective communities they are constantly on the lookout for anything that does not belong and have a network through which to report their sightings.

NORFORCE’s community engagement activities are proving to be highly effective in maintaining an awareness of what is happening around our northern coastline.
