Relocation of Mirage A3-36

23 November 2005

Residents of Katherine and Darwin were confronted by an unusual sight as a Mirage A3-36 Aircraft left RAAF Base Tindal bound for Darwin's Aviation Heritage Centre in a rather unconventional manner – by truck.

The aircraft, a Dassault Mirage Mk IIIO that saw service with Tindal based No.75 Squadron in Butterworth, was retired from service in 1985 after crashing into mud flats in Darwin harbour due to engine failure.

The pilot, then Flying Officer now Air Vice-Marshal John Quaife, ejected safely. The aircraft, however, sustained irreparable damage but was recovered from the mud flats by an A model Chinook to be taken to Darwin’s Aviation Heritage Centre.

The Mirage A3-36 was loaned to No. 75 Squadron from the Heritage Centre for restoration and for display purposes during the Squadron’s 60th Anniversary in 2002.

Now that the restoration is complete, the Mirage A3-36 will make the long 300km-road journey from RAAF Tindal to Darwin's Aviation Heritage Centre where it will become a public display.
