A United States Air Force B-1B long-range multi-role
heavy bomber visited Perth for the first time
in November 2005 to participate in the RAAF
Pearce Air Show. The air show will provide a
unique opportunity for a closeup view of this
giant bomber, normally based in the Pacific
Island of Guam.
The aircraft has a wing span of 137 feet extended, 79 feet swept. It is 146 feet long and 34 feet high. It is powered by four General Electric F-101-GE-102 turbofans, each having 30,000lbs of thrust when operating in afterburner, and weighs 477,000 lbs (216,365kg). It has a top speed of Mach 1.2 at sea level. Its cruise range is 12,000km.
Events at the Pearce Air Show will include flying displays by F-111, F/A-18s, Pilatus PC-9, and Hawk 127. Ground displays from the Royal Australian Air Forces AP-3C Orion, Pilatus PC-9, F/A-18, Hawk 127 and F-111. The United States Air Force B-1B Lancer, Republic of Singapore S2111 Marchetti, F-16s and KC-135 re-fueller which will be open for public viewing, and the West Australian Police Helicopter. Aircraft of interest including Nanchangs, a 3/4 scale Spitfire, Winjeel, Chipmunk and Dash-8 plus many more on static display. The airshow will also encompass exhibitions and demonstrations by civilian and Defence organisations.
The Pearce Air Show is one of a series of air shows with a theme 'Defence and the Community'. Air shows have already been conducted in Victoria, Canberra, Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
