Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, De-Anne Kelly visits ADF families in NT

01 November 2005

During a visit to Robertson Barracks, Darwin, on 27 September 2005, the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, De-Anne Kelly, announced new measures to assist Australian Defence Force members and their families serving in the Northern Territory.

Mrs Kelly said ADF personnel will have access to five days’ dedicated carer’s leave per year - in addition to the existing entitlement of seven days’ compassionate leave per year - to look after the health needs of their families.

In addition, the successful Defence School Transition Aide Program will be expanded to provide three aides to secondary schools in the NT to help children of ADF personnel adjust to their new location.

"The Government recognises that the ADF has a highly mobile workforce and innovative programs must be put in place to reduce the impact of frequent postings on military personnel and the families who support them, particularly for those serving in remote and regional locations," Mrs Kelly said.

The measures build on the recently announced package of service allowances, leave and travel benefits -- worth $35 million -- designed to help lessen the impact on ADF members and their families serving in northern Australia.

Mrs Kelly said the extra school aide positions will be at Darwin High, Katherine High and Palmerston High.
