Defence Minister Robert Hill commemorates Battle for El Alamein
28 April 2005
"We're
here to commemorate young lives cut short, and
to think of their families and the sacrifice
they bore," Senator Hill said.
"El Alamein was one of the most decisive battles
of World War II, and Australian soldiers played
key roles in first resisting and later defeating
General Rommel's forces.
"Australian soldiers were able to engage
an increasing level of German forces, which
weakened enemy positions elsewhere along the
front line.
"This ultimately resulted in the defeat
of Rommel's forces leading to them being eventually
forced out of North Africa."
