Parliamentary Committee visit to ADF in Iraq

Eight members of the Australian Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade made a fact-finding tour of the Australian Defence Force in the Middle East in October 2005.

Led by the Committee's Defence Sub-Committee Chairman, the Hon. Bruce Scott, members of the delegation visited each of the six Task Groups and elements making up the Australian Government’s military contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq.

Members of the fact-finding tour were: Hon. Bruce Scott MP, Hon. Graham Edwards MP, the Hon. Bruce Baird MP, Mr Kim Wilkie MP, Mr Cameron Thompson MP, Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, Mr Barry Haase MP, and Senator David Johnston.

The delegation itinerary included:

Visiting the officers and crew of HMAS NEWCASTLE, on patrol in the Northern Persian Gulf; A flight by some members of the delegation in a Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion on patrol over the Gulf; Visiting the troops of Security Detachment VIII who provide security for Australian Embassy officials in Baghdad; Meeting with the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament in Baghdad; and Briefings from the US Commander of the Multi-National Forces - Iraq, General Casey, and by the Commander of the Australian Joint Task Force, Commodore Geoffrey Ledger, and his principal staff officers.
