Project for better Defence singles’ accommodation

15 December 2005

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Teresa Gambaro MP, on 13 December 2005 visited Brisbane’s Enoggera Barracks - one of the three sites selected for Phase 1 of Project Single LEAP (Living Environment and Accommodation Precinct).
Ms Gambaro said ADF living accommodation is an important factor in maintaining Australia’s military capability and described Project Single LEAP as a major step forward in retaining quality people.

"Defence is competing with other organisations in an ever shrinking employment market to appeal to the cream of Australian youth," Ms Gambaro said. "We ask a lot of our ADF members, be it in the warlike conditions of Iraq or Afghanistan or providing humanitarian assistance in the wake of natural disasters overseas."It is therefore appropriate that we provide these young men and women with the highest standard of living accommodation and treat them with the care and respect they deserve."Married and partnered Defence personnel have long been offered excellent accommodation and we should no longer expect our single servicemen and women to live in conditions that are not up to the standard their colleagues enjoy.

The Australian Government committed $113.2 million to Project Single LEAP in the 04/05 Budget. In Phase 1 of the project, one of four private consortia will be chosen to upgrade on-base singles’ accommodation for up to 1,300 personnel at three major bases.
