Minister for Defence visits SASR

16 August 2005

Regional defence force counter-terrorism experts met in Perth in August 2005 to promote cooperation and information sharing in counter-terrorism.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said the Regional Counter-Terrorism Expert Exchange, hosted by Australia’s Special Air Service Regiment at Campbell Barracks in Perth, is an important contribution to building regional security and Australia’s Defence relationships in the region.

Senator Hill and the Singapore Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean visited Campbell Barracks on 22 August 2005 to meet participants in the Regional Counter Terrorism Expert Exchange.

Senator Hill said the regional exchange was agreed at the successful Regional Counter-Terrorism Conference held in 2004. It follows the first Regional Special Forces Counter-Terrorism Conference held in Bowral, New South Wales, in June 2004.

"The exchange is an important Defence initiative in support of Australia’s whole-of-government efforts to improve counter terrorism capabilities in the region," Senator Hill said.
