Dakota crew members laid to rest funeral service

On the 23 May 2005, a combined team of ten personnel (5 RAAF and 5 Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) traveled to Tembagapura, Papua (Indonesia) to conduct the final recovery of the human remains from RAAF Dakota A65-61.

Previous recovery efforts had been made in 1970 and 1999. The team recovered a significant number of skeletal remains and personal items belonging to the crew and passengers of the aircraft.

Four individuals were recovered, including the remains and identity disc of the missing Army officer, Lieutenant Alun Jones. Lieutenant Jones was not recorded on the aircraft manifest and was therefore not provided a headstone at the interment of the collective remains at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, Bomana in 1971.

A Military funeral was conducted at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery Bomana, on 10 August 2005, with representatives from all families invited to attend. The funeral also involved the interment of the seven sets of remains identified following the 1999 recovery operation.
