Operation
Cranberry is a sea, air and land surveillance
program in northern Australia, undertaken primarily
by RAN Fremantle Class Patrol Boats and Army
Reserve personnel from the Regional Force Surveillance
Unit. The program is undertaken in support of
civil agencies, including Coastwatch and Customs,
to detect illegal activity such as smuggling
and illegal fishing.
The purpose of Operation Cranberry is to coordinate
the Australian Defence Force support to the
whole-of-government effort to maintain the integrity
of Australian territory and interests by deterring
and responding to non-compliance with Australian
laws.
