01 March 2004

This year the Australian Army celebrates its 103rd birthday. To mark this occasion a parade and commemorative service was held this morning at the Australian Army National Memorial (AANM) situated on Anzac Parade in Canberra.

Commencing the service was a parade featuring the Australian Federation Guard and Royal Military College Band. The service was hosted by Deputy Chief of Army, Major General F.X. Roberts, AM, and included distinguished guests the Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon. Robert Hill; Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, The Hon. Mal Brough MP; Chief of the Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove, AC, MC; Deputy Chief of the Defence Force, Vice Admiral Russ Shalders, CSC, RAN.

Today's Army birthday parade and commemorative service was dedicated to the “Diggers” who fought on the African Veldt, in the mud-chocked trenches of France, in the searing heat of the Western Desert and in the tropical jungles of the Pacific and South East Asia. The service also provided an opportunity for members to reflect on those past officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service to their nation and was summed up in the words of the Principal Chaplain Len Eacott, RFD, “Remember our heritage”.
