Australian Aid to Vanuatu

01 March 2004

The first of two Royal Australian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft has delivered much needed emergency stores to cyclone-torn Vanuatu arriving at 6:40am local time today.

The aircraft from RAAF Base Richmond delivered a consignment of tarpaulins, water containers and purification tablets drawn from Emergency Management Australia's disaster relief stocks.

Australian servicemen posted to the region, as well as the Hercules aircrew, assisted local police with hand unloading the supplies.

The Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Mr Steve Waters, said that Red Cross volunteers would repackage the supplies and commence delivery via ship late this afternoon.
