Graduation day in East Timor

29 June 2004

The ADF’s long term commitment to East Timor was again demonstrated on Friday, June 24 when 10 East Timorese students graduated from the recently opened and ADF-built, English Learning Training Facility Centre (ELTF) located in Metinaro, 40km east of Dili. For the students, attendance at ELTF is much more than just learning a foreign language. For each graduate it means a world of opportunity moves within their grasp. Fluent in English, they are now well equipped to explore training opportunities that exist in English-speaking countries.

Four of the graduates from the latest course have already been selected to undergo further training in Australia while another will further his education in the United States of America. As the number of graduates increases, it is hoped that they will continue to travel abroad furthering their education and then returning to their homeland to continue on with the nation-building process.

The ELTF forms part of a larger training complex that was established under the Australian Defence Co-operation Program (DCP) which has been providing support to East Timor since February 2001. Such support has been specifically tailored to meet the ongoing requirements of the East Timorese Defence Force (ETDF) so that it may evolve into a highly credible, relevant and sustainable force in the years ahead. Overall there are 28 DCP members throughout East Timor providing a variety of specialist support ranging from basic military training through to policy development and implementation.
