Apprehension of suspected illegal fishing vessel, Maya V, in the Great Southern Ocean

24 January 2004

The Royal Australian Navy apprehended a suspected illegal fishing vessel, the Maya V, in Australia's Great Southern Ocean on Friday, 23 January 2004. Interception and boarding was conducted in extremely bad weather and high seas by the crew of frigate HMAS Warramunga. The first member of the boarding team from Warramunga fast-roping from the ship's helicopter onto Maya V fell overboard, resulting in cancellation of boarding. Warramunga's boat, which then went to pick up the man overboard, capsized, resulting in the boat crew as well as the boarding team member going overboard. Further efforts from the entire ship's crew under extreme conditions resulted in all personnel who fell overboard being brought back safely onto Warramunga. The Maya V was sent to Fremantle under escort.
