Northern-based patrol boats complete intensive training

19 July 2004

A Navy Task Unit comprised of seven Fremantle class patrol boats returned to Darwin on Friday 16th July after four very successful days of intensive training in the Beagle Gulf.

Exercises included live gunnery firings at towed air and sea targets, boat and helicopter transfers, boarding and manoeuvres at night in close company, and many other tasks designed to test the preparedness and hone the skills of every sailor.

Commander Mark Burling, who was responsible for conducting the exercise said, 'I am very pleased with the overall performance of all of the ships and their crews. The Sea Training Unit really put them through the hoops. Right now we have some pretty tired people, but we know that they are well trained and ready to go.'

'Our patrol boats are kept very busy throughout the year with regular surveillance operations across the northern part of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone, during which they practice their patrolling and boarding skills. But it is also important that the crews maintain a high level of proficiency in other warfare skills. And that's why we get them together in exercises like this.'

Ships taking part in the exercise included HMA Ships Dubbo, Wollongong, Warrnambool, Fremantle, Gawler, Bendigo and Gladstone. HMAS Bendigo was awarded the Minor War Vessel Shield for best overall achievement in the exercise.
