Military traffic movements on Bruce Highway

Residents and motorists in southeast and central Queensland may notice increased military transport activity on the Bruce Highway in February and March as Australian Army trucks ferry 350 shipping containers from Brisbane to Shoalwater Bay via Rockhampton.

The empty containers will be assembled as training structures in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area.

Army trucks will transport the containers from Monday to Saturday each week. The activity will generate a very small increase over normal traffic volumes which should not inconvenience other motorists.

The transportation of the empty containers will be spread over two months during daylight hours to ensure maximum safety and minimum inconvenience to other road users and residents along the route. Defence seeks the understanding and cooperation of motorists and residents during this time.

The containers will be cycled through the Defence establishment at Western Street in Rockhampton. When being forwarded to the final destination, trucks will use the Green Route between the Bruce Highway and the Shoalwater Bay Training Area.  This access route to the training area is maintained with support of Defence funding.

The shipping containers are being modified in Brisbane for use as buildings in the creation of a mock town for military training purposes. The central Queensland community was informed last year, through the media and community meetings, of the intention to use these empty shipping containers to create an urban training facility. This facility will be used to train our soldiers to operate effectively in urban environments.
