NAVY HELICOPTER CRASHES IN INDONESIA

A Royal Australian Navy Sea King helicopter has crashed in the vicinity of Gunung Sitoli on Nias Island off the west coast of Sumatra at approximately 730 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) this evening.

The helicopter, from HMAS Kanimbla, was conducting a sortie in support of Operation Sumatra Assist (Phase 2), the Australian Defence Force’s humanitarian contribution to the earthquake relief effort.

Up to eleven people, including the aircraft’s crew of three, were on board. Full details are not yet available.

HMAS Kanimbla is steaming towards the vicinity of the crash site.
