AIR FORCE HERCULES PARTICIPATE IN WORLD CRICKET TSUNAMI APPEAL
Two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will conduct a fly-past during the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) this evening to mark the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) contribution to disaster relief efforts. Both aircraft will travel from their home base at RAAF Richmond west of Sydney to Melbourne today, and are scheduled to arrive above the stadium at 6.10pm. One of the Hercules, a C-130J model, will continue its journey to Indonesia to assist victims of the Asian tsunami. The aircraft will be one of six RAAF Hercules and a Boeing 707 currently involved in Operation Sumatra Assist, supporting the humanitarian relief effort by transporting equipment, stores and personnel between Medan and Banda Aceh as well as between Australia and Indonesia. Since 27 December, ADF crews have worked tirelessly around the clock to assist victims of the tsunami. RAAF aircraft have carried more than 240 tonnes of humanitarian aid.
