Ongoing Success for the Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme

Recruits in Singleton were fired on from above and below during a live fire bunker assault this week. Fighter jets (F/A-18s), armoured personnel carriers (APCs), machine guns and explosives unleashed simulated fire on the recruits as they attempted the assault as part of their selection to join Australia’s elite Special Forces.

With only six months in Defence, the Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme (SFDRS) recruits successfully achieved their mission, using live ammunition with small arms (M4 and F89) and grenades.

New Deputy Special Forces Commander Brigadier (BRIG) Tim McOwan watched as the attack occurred.

"The SFDRS continues to be a momentous success having now received 1200 applicants since its launch in October 2003. The fourth and final intake for this year occurred in November and again the calibre of the recruits is very impressive," BRIG McOwan said.

"It is incredible to see how far these recruits have come in just six months. Their performance as a team continues to meet the challenges set by the Special Forces Training Centre. The SFDRS continues to be a great success for the ADF and Special Operations Command, BRIG McOwan said.

To date there have been 186 members enlisted as part of the SFDRS scheme. The fifth intake is already full with 48 enlistees ready to commence training in January 2005.

The SFDRS recruits involved in this week’s activity will complete their selection training in two weeks, after which the successful members will be posted into Special Operations Command.
