FINAL DESEAL/RESEAL REPORT RELEASED The Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Angus Houston, has today released the report of the General Health and Medical Study, conducted as part of the Study of Health Outcomes in Aircraft Maintenance Personnel (SHOAMP). The Report represents the final part of the SHOAMP, which commenced in October 2001 following the F-111 Deseal/Reseal Board of Inquiry. In releasing the Report, Air Marshal Houston thanked those who participated in the study for their efforts and their patience, and renewed his commitment to Air Force people.
" I would like, once again to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone involved in the study - The Department of Veterans’ Affairs, The Scientific Advisory Committee, the University of Newcastle Research Associates and most especially all the members of the Air Force community who participated in and assisted with the study. "This has been a long, complex and comprehensive study, and the patience and dedication of all of those people involved is outstanding. "I remain committed to doing all that I can to help any one whose health has been affected by their time in the Service," Air Marshal Houston said. "The safety and well being of all our people is paramount. Many improvements have been made in the last few years in occupational health and workplace safety management. I remain fully committed to ensuring all Air Force personnel have a safe working environment in which they can operate and excel today and into the future". The results of the Health Study point to an association between exposure to chemicals used in the F-111 Deseal/Reseal programs and a number of adverse health outcomes presenting in some personnel who were involved in these programs. The results of the final study will be considered by the government.
To date, four volumes of work have been released. This latest volume presents the results of the Phase III of the study. Those personnel identified as having participated in the DSRS programs, and who could be contacted, were invited to take part in the study which included comprehensive health examinations by a nurse, doctor and clinical psychologist. The SHOAMP was administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, on behalf of the Department of Defence and was conducted by The University of Newcastle Research Associates Limited with assistance from Health Services Australia, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and Queensland Medical Laboratories.
