ANZAC DAY 2003

Australian Defence Force personnel will commemorate ANZAC Day both in Australia and around the world with a range of activities, as serving personnel honour the spirit and memory of the ANZAC.

The day is of special significance to members of the Australian Defence Force, as the entire nation acknowledges the service and sacrifice of several generations of service men and women.

Senior government and Defence representatives will attend a range of activities both in Australia and overseas to commemorate this day. These official activities will be reflected in hundreds of smaller activities in Australia and in locations around the world.

Details of the events to be attended by Senator Hill, Minister Vale and Parliamentary Secretary Bailey, Chief of the Defence Force, Secretary of Defence and the three Defence Service Chiefs are as follows:

Minister for Defence – Senator Robert Hill

Senator Hill will commemorate ANZAC Day on board HMAS Kanimbla, currently stationed in the Persian Gulf

Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence – Mrs Danna Vale

Minister Vale will attend Anzac Day commemorations in Belgium on 25th April, with ceremonies at Zonnebeke, Passchendaele and at the Menin Gate in Ieper.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence – Ms Fran Bailey

Ms Bailey will be attending the Dawn Service at the Healesville RSL, followed by a Dedication of Commemorative Walls ceremony and ANZAC Day service at the Broadford RSL. Later in the afternoon Ms Bailey will attend the ANZAC Day service at the Whittlesea RSL.

Chief of the Defence Force – General Peter Cosgrove

General Cosgrove will commemorate ANZAC Day on board HMAS Kanimbla, currently stationed in the Persian Gulf

Secretary of Defence – Mr Ric Smith

Mr Smith will commemorate ANZAC Day on board HMAS Kanimbla, currently stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Chief of Air Force – Air Marshal Angus Houston

Air Marshal Houston will represent the Chief of the Defence Force in Canberra at a number of services including the Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial and the Memorial Church Service, to be held at St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manuka ACT. Air Marshal Houston will also will review the Parade at ANZAC Day Ceremony to be held at the Australian War Memorial at 10:30am.

Chief of Army – Lieutenant General Peter Leahy

Lieutenant General Leahy will attend the Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove as well as a service at Lone Pine during the morning. He will be joined by Regimental Sergeant Major – Army, Warrant Office Class One Brian Boughton along with a contingent from the Australian Federation Guard and the Royal Military College - Duntroon Band.

Chief of Navy – Vice Admiral Chris Ritchie

Vice Admiral Chris Ritchie will be attending the Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial as well as the Memorial Church Service to be held at St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manuka ACT.
