Major General Duncan E. Lewis, DSC, CSC
Major General Duncan Lewis graduated from the Royal Military College in 1975 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has seen regimental service in the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and three tours with the Special Air Service Regiment. As a junior officer he served with UNTSO as a military observer during the 1982 Lebanon War. He has commanded at all levels from platoon to regimental level. He commanded the Special Air Service Regiment from 1990-92, which included command of the national counter terrorist Tactical Action Group. For his services as commanding officer he was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross. He has held appointments on the instructional staff of the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Army Command and Staff College.
Major General Lewis has served in staff appointments on the Divisional Headquarters as an operations and personnel staff officer. He has served more recently on the Army Headquarters staff as Director of the Defence Reform Program in Army and as the Director of Strategy and International Engagement. During the INTERFET period he was appointed the ADF spokesman on East Timor. Major General Lewis was Army Attache in Jakarta from 1994-96 and returned to Jakarta as acting HADS for a short period in 1998 following the evacuation of Australian nationals.
Major General Lewis was promoted to the rank of Brigadier in January 2000 and appointed Commander Sector West UNTAET, PKF in East Timor where he commanded the Australian and New Zealand forces on the ET/WT border. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his command in East Timor. He assumed his current appointment as Commander Special Forces in January 2001. Major General Lewis was promoted to the rank of Major General on 19th December 2002. He is a graduate of the British Army Staff College, Camberley and the United States Army War College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of NSW and a Graduate Diploma in Defence Studies from Deakin University. He is a graduate of the ADF School of Languages where he studied Indonesian.
Major General Lewis is 48 years of age. He and his wife, Jenny, have two teenage children (Alison and Simon). His interests include Australian Rules Football, Tennis and history.
