WHAT:           Promotion of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment's mascot, Private Quintus Septimus Sabre, a Bengal Tiger.

WHEN:           11am Sunday 10 August 2008

WHO:             Private Sabre will be promoted by Lieutenant Colonel Jake Ellwood, Commanding Officer of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment

The 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (5 RAR) has long been known as the ‘Tiger Battalion’, and since 1967 has had a Tiger as its mascot.  A unit’s mascot is enlisted in the Army and can be promoted like any other soldier.

On Sunday, 5 RAR’s current Tiger, Private Sabre, will be promoted to Corporal during a ceremony at his home in Crocodylus Park.  Members of the public and media are welcome to attend this momentous occasion.

As part of the promotion, a static vehicle display of Armoured Personnel Carriers and an interactive display of infantry weapons will be held at the park from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

Sabre is the third official mascot of 5 RAR  ‘Tiger Battalion’.  He was officially enlisted as a Private in the Army, and the Battalion's mascot, on 3 December 2003 by former Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy.
