AUSTRALIAN COMMANDER TO ADDRESS

BANDA ACEH MEDIA

What: As Australian military units withdraw from Banda Aceh, Brigadier David Chalmers will address the media to thank the people of Banda Aceh and local authorities.

Where: International Media Centre, Banda Aceh.

When: 11.00am (Banda Aceh time) on Thursday, 24 February 2005.

Note to media:

Background:

  • The ANZAC Field Hospital has been reincorporated into the Zainoel Abidin Hospital.
  • New Zealand medical teams have returned home.

  • Water purification has been handed over to civilian authorities and major engineering work has been completed.

  • The ADF has distributed 2.5 million pounds of humanitarian aid supplies.
  • Almost five million litres of clean water has been distributed.
  • 3600 procedures have been performed by ANZAC medical teams.
  • Kilometres of drains and streets have been cleared of rubble and silt.
