DANISH COMPANY AWARDED
ELECTRONIC WARFARE CONTRACT
The Department of Defence has placed a contract with a Danish company,
TERMA Elektronik AS of Denmark, to supply Electronic Warfare Management
Systems for the RAAF's fleet of F-111C aircraft.
The TERMA contract is part of an interim upgrade for the F-111s' Electronic
Warfare systems and another step in a series of updates for the front
line strike aircraft.
The TERMA Electronic Warfare Management System (EWMS) will be integrated
with the aircraft's Radar Warning Receiver to provide control and operation
of the Countermeasures Dispenser System and Electronic Countermeasures
Jammer System.
Designated AN/ALQ-213(V), the system offers freedom in the operation
of EW suite sensors or other intelligent systems, including Reconnaissance
Equipment Pods. It allows the crew to manage an integrated EW suite, including
threat assessment capabilities, from one single control unit.
TERMA has offered its system for a one time licence fee which means the
RAAF can utilise the system on other aircraft without further outlay on
Intellectual Property (IP) issues. The contract also includes an option
on additional systems for other aircraft.
The TERMA system is already in service with European air forces and the
United States Air Force. About 1000 units have been delivered worldwide
with more than 400 on order. The system has been fitted to aircraft ranging
from F-16 fighters to C-130 transports and various utility aircraft as
well as helicopters, including the CH-47D Chinook.
A company engineer has been posted to the F-111 home base of Amberley
in Queensland to oversee the integration.
The contract, valued at 31 million Danish Kroner (or about $A8 million),
also includes support equipment and training.
