DEFENCE CHIEF REITERATES CONSCRIPT REMARKS
"My comments about conscripts on the recent 'Sunday' program were specifically
reflecting on National Service in today's circumstances and the military
operation in East Timor," the Chief of the Defence Force, Admiral Chris
Barrie said today.
"I made no reference at all to occasions in the past when National Service
was used as the primary basis of Australia's defence capability.
"As a Vietnam veteran myself, I understand the important role played
by 'Nashos' in that particular conflict, as well as on other occasions.
"I am very aware of how emotional this subject has been in our social
history. My comments were made in response to a particular question relating
to the sustainment of our force in East Timor and must not be interpreted
as a reflection of wider issues, which some veterans appear to be doing,"
Admiral Barrie said.
"However, I have no doubt that in a modern high technology defence force
and in the circumstances Australia currently faces, conscription is not
appropriate."
