DEFENCE TO CONTRACT OUT GARRISON SUPPORT
SERVICES IN SOUTHERN VICTORIA
The Defence Organisation expects to save around 16 per cent of future
costs through a five-year contract worth $285million for garrison support
services in Southern Victoria.
The preferred tenderer selected to provide services in Southern Victoria
is Transfield Maintenance, a division of Transfield Pty Ltd in a strategic
alliance with SSL Nationwide Facilities Management, a division of Spotless
Services Australia Limited.
The services provided under the contract will include cleaning and waste
removal, grounds maintenance and pest control, catering and accommodation,
security and logistic support, laundry and dry cleaning and a clothing
store.
The contracted services will be provided at Victoria Barracks and Defence
Plaza, Melbourne, HMAS Cerberus, RAAF Base East Sale, RAAF Williams (Laverton
and Point Cook), DSTO sites at Fishermen's Bend and Maribyrong, and Army
units at Puckapunyal, Bendigo, Watsonia, Broadmeadows, as well as at many
other smaller Army units.
Transfield was selected as the preferred tenderer from five companies.
No in-house tender was submitted by Defence personnel.
Contract operations will be gradually phased in from about October 1999.
It is expected that the contract will create additional employment opportunities
for the local community in each area.
