MAIDEN FLIGHT FOR ADF BALLOON

The Australian Defence Force's newest hot-air balloon will launch off on its maiden flight tomorrow morning at 8:00am from the lawns of Old Parliament House, Canberra.

Flight Lieutenant Adam Williams, of the Royal Australian Air Force's 28th (City of Canberra) Squadron, will pilot the balloon.

“The balloon displays a picture of a Navy frigate warship, an Air Force Hornet fighter jet and an Army Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV). It is a very visual reminder that the ADF is in the business of defending the nation,” he said.

The artwork was designed by Jeff Isaacs, a former defence artist, and represents some of the most intricate illustrations yet seen on an Australia-made balloon.

The maiden flight will be 'tethered.' This means the balloon is tied to a rope and will rise to 60 feet (20 metres) before descending. FLTLT Williams will be joined by Signaller Linda McCann from the Army and ……………….. from the Navy.

The RAAF's 28th Squadron, an Active Reserve unit, has operated a hot-air balloon for promotional purposes since March 1990 from RAAF Base Fairbairn. There are two balloon pilots, FLTLT Williams, and Squadron Leader Bob Cook, an Active Reserve member. The crew is drawn from the unit's permanent and reserve personnel.

“We attend about 25 events a year, mostly on the East coast because the balloon is usually transported by road,” FLTLT Williams said. “The balloon will attend community events such as festivals, agricultural shows, and Air Force Week held at Sydney's Darling Harbour.”

The balloon will soon become a familiar sight at major community events. Between engagements, pilots and crew undertake training flights once a week in the Canberra area.

Chiefs of Staff please note: Camera crews and journalists are welcome to 'soar' with FLTLT Williams from 8:00am tomorrow.
