MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR NATIONAL ABORIGINAL AND ISLANDER DAY OBSERVANCE COMMITTEE CELEBRATIONS

Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders who served in the Australian Defence Force during times of war will be honoured tomorrow, (Tuesday, July 6) at a memorial service to celebrate the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week.

The service, commencing at 12.30pm, will be attended by senior defence officials representing the Secretary for Defence, Chief of the Defence Force and the three Service chiefs and is to be held at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Memorial (behind the Australian War Memorial).

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Memorial was built following a resolution by the United Nations in 1994 (the International Year of the World's Indigenous People) defining the goal of the decade as one of strengthening international co-operation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous peoples.
