DEFENCE TARGETS ENERGY AND GREENHOUSE GAS SAVINGS
The Department of Defence is serious about saving energy and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. So much so that it has established the Defence
Energy Efficiency Program (DEEP) and called in consultants to work with
Defence to develop a plan for achieving energy savings of at least 15%
throughout its facilities from 2003.
"Defence facilities consume a large part of the total energy used in
buildings occupied by Commonwealth agencies, and it is essential that
Defence takes a leading role in meeting the Government's commitment to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions", said Mr Peter Sharp, Head Defence Corporate
Support.
To support this campaign, Defence has engaged an Energy Management Consortium,
comprising Dames and Moore, EMET Consultants and National Project Consultants.
The Consortium will study all Defence facilities to develop a fully --
costed and economically viable national Defence energy management plan
and investment program to achieve the reduction targets.
The project will be undertaken in two phases: a planning and development
phase to be completed later this year and the implementation and investment
phase scheduled for completion in 2002.
