MEDIA ALERT
DEFENCE FUEL CONFERENCE IN CANBERRA NEXT WEEK
The Department of Defence will seek input from major oil companies and
the States and Territories in an afternoon conference to be conducted
at Defence Headquarters next Tuesday (2/3).
The Head of Capability Programs and Resources, Dr Ian Williams, will
open the conference shortly after 1pm.
Departmental experts will brief the delegates, including senior representatives
of BP, Caltex, Mobil, Shell and the Australian Institute of Petroleum
on the results of a Bulk Liquid Distribution Study undertaken by the Capability
Analysis Branch of the Strategic Policy and Plans Division in the Headquarters.
Departmental speakers are expected to outline broad Defence thinking
on further study on the source of supply for fuels, as well as its distribution,
management and support before seeking a response from industry to the
study.

demand);
- 3.7 million liters of aviation gasoline (about 4% of national demand);
and
- 190 million litres of diesel (automotive and ship – about 1.7%
of national demand).
About $200 million is spent annually in Australia and about $20 million
offshore. Shell, BP, Mobil (and GASENG) hold contracts to provide diesel
and Shell, BP, Mobil and Caltex, contracts to provide aviation fuels.]
