Defence to Contract out Garrison Support Services in
Western Australia
The Department of Defence expects to save up to 17 per cent of future
costs through a five-year contract worth $107 million for garrison support
services in Western Australia.
The preferred tender selected to provide services in Western Australia
is Transfield Maintenance Pty Ltd.
The services provided under the contract will include cleaning and waste
removal, grounds maintenance, laundry and dry cleaning, catering and accommodation,
domestic transport, powerhouse and port services, security, firefighting
services, range and training area management, management of recreational
and physical training facilities and management of quartermaster's stores.
The contracted services will be provided at Army units based at Leeuwin,
Palmer, Campbell and Irwin Barracks, RAAF Pearce, Gin Gin and Caversham
and HMAS Stirling as well as many other smaller Army units, including
Reserve in Western Australia.
Transfield was selected as the preferred tenderer from three companies
as well as an in-house submission from Defence personnel.
Transfield contract services will be gradually phased in from about
April 1999.
