Defence to Contract out Garrison Support Services in
South Australia
Defence has selected Transfield Pty Ltd as its preferred tenderer to
carry out a wide range of garrison support services in South Australia.
Subject to successful negotiations, Transfield Maintenance will provide
a wide variety of services at the major Army, Air Force and Defence Science
and Technology establishments at Edinburgh, Keswick, Port Wakefield, Salisbury
and Woodside.
The contract requires that the successful bidder:
- Support training exercises on military ranges;
- Provide security, firefighting and rescue services;
- Provide catering requirements and manage barracks accommodation;
- Manage recreational and physical training facilities;
- Provide grounds maintenance;
- Clean buildings and remove garbage and waste;
- Operate some retail-level stores;
- Manage domestic transport services; and
- Provide laundry and dry cleaning services.
Defence and Transfield Maintenance are now negotiating a contract expected
to be worth more than $70 million over five years from next March.
The contract will reduce the cost of providing the services by about
18 per cent.
Until now, garrison support services have been provided by a mix of
uniformed Service personnel and civilian public servants.
The decision will release more uniformed personnel to perform Defence’s
core tasks.
Although the total number of people required to carry out the services
will be reduced, the transition to an all-civilian, commercial operation
will increase the number of civilian job opportunities in the region.
