INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS FOR CANBERRA DEFENCE SEMINAR

Senior Services and Government Officers from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States will speak at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) seminar on "Armed Forces and the Societies they Serve" in Canberra this week.

The seminar will be held at the Australian Defence Force Academy on Thursday and Friday 15 - 16 May 1997.

The speakers will include the Canadian Deputy Minister of National Defence, Ms Louise Frechette; the New Zealand Secretary of Defence, Mr Gerald C. Hensley; Chief of the Singapore Defence Force, Lieutenant General Bey Soo Khiang; UK Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Willis; Commander in Chief US Pacific Command, Admiral Joseph Prueher; and Commander of the French Forces in New Caledonia, General Dde Division Maurice Quadri.

Australian presenters will include the Minister for Defence, Mr Ian McLachlan, Defence Secretary Mr Tony Ayers; and Chief of the Defence Force, General John Baker.

The seminar will explore the past, present and future connections between the Defence Forces and the community in European, North American, Asian and Australian Cultures.

Chiefs of staff, news eds, pic eds: The seminar will be held at the Defence Academy Assemble Hall. Sessions begin at 9.30am and 1.30pm on Thursday and 9am and 2pm on Friday.
