UPGRADE TO JINDALEE RADAR AT ALICE SPRINGS
The Department of Defence has signed a contract worth about
$10 million with British Aerospace Australia Ltd for the upgrade of the
Frequency Management System at the Royal Australian Air Force's No 1 Radar
Surveillance unit, Jindalee Over The Horizon radar site.
The Frequency Management System provides data to enable determination of the best frequencies for particular surveillance tasks at varying times of the day, for different seasons, and for various points in the solar cycle.
The current system based on 1970's technology has now reached the end of its life and is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain.
The new Frequency Management System will enhance RAAF's surveillance operations and continuing research and development by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.
The Electronic Systems Group of British Aerospace Australia, based in Salisbury South Australia, will start the upgrade in May this year and should complete the project in late 1998.
